Dolphin Coast, Kwazulu-Natal Mar 2 to Mar 9

via flight from Mumbai (13.5h)

Major activities:
  • Decompression after a month in India
  • Lots of meals with MEAT!
  • Clean!
  • Separate room for the kids… yeah!
  • Car rental… mobility freedom
  • uShaka Marine World and Water Park
  • Gateway Theatre of Shopping visits
  • Swimming in a large tidal pool
  • Exploring small tidal pools
  • Castle building on the beach
  • New iPad, camera and computer… ouch!

Eating meat again as a regular thing

St Lucia Mar 9 to Mar 13

via meandering drive from Durban (5h)

Major activities:
  • Boat ride with hippos and crocs
  • Day trip to iMfolozi (see below)
  • Watched some african dancing
  • Beachcombing
  • Watched monkey making multiple attempts to steal someone’s beach gear
  • Night searches for hippos (no luck)
  • Sonja and Emma discovered “biltong”
  • Tour of a cheese farm and how it is made
  • Got to mik a goat
  • Tried fresh goat’s milk

Major activities:
  • Animals, animals, animals… lions, buffalo, elephants, rhinos, giraffes, zebras, impala, wild dogs, hyenas and more
  • Camping on a game reserve… oh the sounds…
  • Night drive through the reserve… got to use a big spotlight
  • Emma surprised by a hyena at night
  • Tussled with a hyena over dinner
  • Off road driving in a very small car

Giant’s Castle Game Reserve Mar 14 to Mar 16

via drive from iMfolozi Game Reserve (10h)

Major activities:
  • Loooong drive… amazing African scenery
  • Stayed in a mountain cottage with a fireplace near a large stream
  • Cozied up around the fire
  • Hiking in the Drakensburg on very overgrown trails
  • Evading a troop of baboon
  • Lessons on early humans and their cave drawings
  • More African dancing

Durban Mar 16 to Mar 19

via drive from Giant’s Castle Game Reserve (4?h)

Major activities:
  • Nice hotel on the beach
  • Body surfing in beautiful, calm and transparent waves (best surfing conditions yet on the trip)
  • Visiting with friends in the countryside
  • Visited to top of the Moses Mabhida stadium

Cape Town Mar 19 to Mar 25

via flight from Durban (2.5h)

Major activities:
  • South African soccer game
  • Great fish at the fish market (V&A)
  • Visited the Slave Lodge and learned all about slavery
  • Visited “District 6” and learned about how the community was dismantled by Apartheid
  • Visited the “Castle of Good Hope”… well really it is a fort
  • First time on “Hop-on-hop-off” bus
  • Missed out on trip to Table Mountain due to mist
  • Played hacky-sac at the beach front
  • Overnight train to Johannesburg… dramatic scenery and a bit of luxury

  • Shopping at Nelson Mandela Square
  • Tried the “Hop-on-hop-off” bus again… much safer than way
  • History lesson at the Apartheid Museum
