via flight from Johannesburg (17h) through Doha

Major activities:
  • Visited Roman ruins in town
  • Floating in the Dead Sea
  • Visiting the river Jordan
  • Visited Mount Nebo
  • Exploring the old roman city of Jerash (what is left of it)
  • Exploring the fragrant markets of Amman
  • Sonja learned to make mottabal, fattet magdoos and tabbouleh
  • Learned about the history of man in the Jordan Museum
  • Saw fragments of the dead sea scrolls

via private tour down the King’s Highway from Amman (8h)

Major activities:
  • Visited the “Grand Canyon” of Jordan
  • Visited crusader castles from the 12th century
  • Walked around the ancient city of Petra
  • Had a horse ride
  • Got to visit another police station (rather pushy horse attendant)

via taxi from Wadi Musa (1.5h)

Major activities:
  • Camel ride in the desert
  • 4×4 drive through the desert
  • Hunting the water springs
  • Running up and down sand dunes
  • Camping overnight with a bedouin family. Slept with the goats
  • Climbed up lots and lots of rocks
  • Left stinking of goats and smoke… but we had fun

via taxi from Aqaba (15m) , taxi from border (15m) and bus from Eliat (3.5h)

Major activities:
  • Stayed in the Muslim Quarter
  • Visited the Church of the Holy Seplchure
  • Visited the Western Wall
  • Visited the Mount of Olives
  • Roamed around the walled city
  • Saw paths where Jesus walked with the cross

Major activities:
  • Overpaid for hotel, bigtime!
  • Saw the Med for the first time
  • Chilled out at the beach
  • Saw military helicopters flying overhead
  • Enjoyed surprisingly good Mexican food
  • Walked along the coast to Jaffa
  • Played on every play structure that we could find

Istanbul, Turkey Apr 12 to Apr 16

via flight from Tel Aviv (2h)

Major activities:
  • Crazy, long taxi ride from airport… cabbie could find the hotel
  • First time in Europe… then back to Asia… then back to Europe… then…
  • Toured the Hagia Sofia and Blue Mosque
  • Shopping at the Grand Bazaar
  • Discovered Turkish Delight
  • Witnessed sights and smells of the spice markets in the Egyptian Bazaar
  • Walked through the massive wholesale markets
  • Bosphorus boat cruise
  • Another “Hop-on-hop-off” bus
  • Strolled around Taksim Square
  • Found a great restaurant for kebabs
  • Went underground in the Basilica Cistern
  • Indulged in Turkish coffees
