When we were in Railay Beach, Thailand, we stumbled upon a little shop. This shop did rock climbing tours. They do two different types of rock climbing events. One is over the water with other activities. The other is rock climbing they do right next to the water but over land. It did not included other activities.
The first event we did was the water one. We left Railay Beach around 1pm. To get to the boat we had to walk through the ocean. The water was up to our knees. The boat was a long tail. We packed in to the boat and headed off to our first destination.
Our first destination was a section of rock with three climbing areas. I immediately started climbing the ladder of the first area. I didn’t want to go too far up because I wasn’t sure what the jump would be like. Also I couldn’t find a good way to go up high. I just went sideways, going slowly up as I went. On my first try, I went maybe three metres sideways just to get a feel for being up in the air.
We had to climb a ladder from the water to where the good climbing started. The rope ladder went about three metres in the air and then we could start climbing.
On my second try, I went a bit farther. I made it up to four meters in the air and five meters sideways from the ladder. Then I jumped. The climb was very fun and challenging. I found the hardest part this tiny ledge. Once you get to it there is almost nothing after it. The part after the ledge is defiantly the hardest. On one of my tries going across the ledge, I slipped and fell. Luckily I was high enough in the air and was able to get in a ok position for landing in the water.
It took me a few more tries, but I finally made it past the hard part. When I got to the end of the hard part, I was about seven metres in the air. I was a bit scared because the water makes it look so much farther. After a couple of minutes of resting, I started climbing again. I climbed a couple more metres to about 9-10 metres and jumped. Jumping from that height was the highest I had ever jumped in my life. I was pretty happy about it.
When we all got back on the boat, we headed just around the bend to another climb. This climb was difficult. I couldn’t climb it without having to be more than six metres in the air. I didn’t want to do it. Others went up though. There were three people that tried. All of them made it up to about 15 metres. One guy was scared to jump from that high, but in the end he did.
Once he did we went to a little snorkelling place. It was not much of a reef, because all the sea urchins had ruined the coral. Still we saw lots of tiny striped fish.
We got back on the boat after about 15 minutes and headed for a beach. When we were at the beach, we watched the sunset, ate dinner and started a fire. The fire was pretty big. It had a cool glow on the white sand.
After sunset our guide brought out some juggling torches. He lit them on fire and started playing with them. He was really good at it. He also got some people in our group to try to do some stunts with them. We all had a very good time. When we were finished at the beach and the fire got put out, we headed to a little area in the ocean to see some glowing plankton.
Jacob and I were both very excited to see the glowing plankton because we have never seen it before. When we got there we hopped in and started swimming around. Plankton are not usually seen in the water but if it is night time and your moving around it triggers a reaction. This reaction causes the plankton to glow. In different places they glow different colours. For instance in Vancouver they glow orange and in Thailand they glow blue. I think it is really cool that they are different colours.
I really enjoyed this day.
The next day we went rock climbing over land. Jacob and I both had sore hande from climbing the day before.
When we got to the area to go rock climbing, we started almost right away. The first climb we did looked really easy to do, but it definitely fooled us. Jacob and I both found this climb difficult, even though it only went up maybe five metres. I loved the climb anyways. I love almost every climb outdoors. They are a lot better than indoor gyms.
Once we finished that climb, we headed for the next two. These two climbs were very fun. One of them had stalagmites and stalactites. It was really fun to climb, even though it was one of the harder climbs. It took me a long time to get to the top, but when I did I felt great. The second one had some hard parts and some really easy parts. On one part, I had to try and find a hand hold for about five minutes, because they were so small near the top. The first one took a little longer then the second. They were both really fun.
We took a little break before we started the last climb. We took the break for two reasons. The first reason was because someone was climbing it. The second reason was because it was the longest climb. During our break, we just sat by the ocean, drank water and relaxed. Once the last person from the other group was finished the climb, we took our last sips of water and climbed on.
Once on I realized it was going to be hard. There were not a lot of hand hold or foot holds. I could see it was going to be a long time before I got to the top. There were very easy parts and very hard parts. Parts close to the very top and near the bottom were harder. The middle was easy. Lucky for me there was no sun shining on the rock when I was climbing. That made it easier. When I got to the top, there was a beautiful view of all of Railay. It was amazing how small Railay was for up there. It was trapped on two sides by water and the other two by mountains. I would never forget the view: 25 meters in the air, on the side of a cliff, looking out over the whole town.
When Jacob and I finished the climbs, we were so tired. We had had a very tiring morning. Don’t get me wrong. It was fun, but tiring. We had an amazing time climbing that morning and wished we could have done more. We probably would’ve, if we didn’t have to leave the next day.
We had an awesome time in Railay rock climbing.
