Our itinerary for Vietnam was as follows. This part of the trip was very much on the fly.

Major activities:
  • Dodging motorbikes
  • City Walks
  • Enjoying real bread and cheese
  • Enjoying the local cuisine

Hanoi Meal Hanoi Street

Halong Bay Oct 19 to Oct 21

via bus from Hanoi (4h)

Major activities:
  • Boat cruise
  • Swimming
  • Diving
  • Kayaking
  • Fishing for squid off the boat (didn’t catch anything)
  • Visited floating villages
  • Visited some limestone caves
  • Visited pearl farming
  • Teaching card games to Malaysian ship mates
  • Survived Karaoke overload
  • On-board cooking class

Hue Oct 22 to Oct 25

via bus & overnight train from Halong Bay via Hanoi (14h)

Major activities:
  • Motorcycle tour (villages and storm ravaged country-side)
  • Met up with friends
  • Swimming in the pool
  • Helped hotel staff write in English

Working the fields

We needed a guide.  Our international drivers licenses are not recognized in Vietnam.

Hoi An Oct 25 to Nov 2

via private mini-van w/friends (6h)

Major activities:
  • Dentist visit (Jacob) in Danang
  • Good eating
  • Bicycle riding (Jacob learned to double)
  • Bicycle/motorbike collision (Emma)
  • Body surfing
  • Kite flying
  • Cooking class (Sonja)
  • School work and relaxing

Mui Ne Nov 3 to Nov 7

via taxi/overnight train/taxi from Hoi An/Danang (30m/14h/30m)

Major activities:
  • Beachcombing
  • Swimming
  • Buggy driving on sand dunes
  • Visited fishing village
  • Walking and wading through villages & creeks
  • Ostrich riding (kids-only)
  • Awesome greek food

Mui Ne Fairy Creek Mui Ne Sunset

Ho Chi Minh City/Saigon Nov 7 to Nov 10

via bus from Mui Ne (5h)

Major activities:
  • Advanced education topics in the “Backpackers District”
  • Deserted amusement park rides
  • Big outdoor wave pool swimming
  • Visited markets
  • City Walk led by the kids

Dae Nam Waterpark Saigon Street

Mekong Delta Nov 10 to Nov 12

via bus tour from Saigon (multiple stops over three days)

Major activities:
  • Small canal boat ride
  • Visited canal villages
  • Visited Coconut candy factory
  • Visited Honey factory
  • Visited Rice milling factory
  • Visited Rice paper/noodle factory
  • Visited Fish Farm
  • Visited Cai Rang Floating Market
  • Visited Cham (Muslim) village
  • Stayed in a floating hotel
