Our China Itinerary

For context, here is the itinerary that we ended up with in China.  Some of it was pre-planned and some of it just happened.

Beijing – Sep 3 to Sep 9

via flight from Vancouver – 9h

Major activities:
  • Hutongs
  • Forbidden Palace
  • Lakes
  • Beihai Park
  • Market
  • Summer Palace
  • Great Wall

It smelled so good that we had to check it out.

Curious George loved it here. He didn't have to climb the stairs!  Lucky monkey.

Datong – Sep 9 to Sep 12

via train from Beijing – 8h hard seat

Major activities:
  • Yungang Grottos
  • Hanging Monastery
  • Hand-washing laundry

The area was excavated along the mountain, revealing 53 caves, some are cavernous rooms and others are small nooks carved into the rock face.

The Hanging Monastery appears to cling to the rock face.

Pingyao – Sep 12 to Sep 16

via train from Datong – 8h hard seat

Major activities:
  • Walled City

The kids playing cards in the courtyard of our hotel was a nightly attraction for whichever tour group was staying there at the moment.Pingyao

Xi’an – Sep 17 to Sep 19

via train from Pingyao – 12h hard seat/hard sleeper thru Taiyuan

  • Muslim Quarter

Chengdu – Sep 23 to Sep 28

via train from Wudangshan – 18h soft sleeper

Major activities:
  • Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding
  • Cooking class (Sonja & Emma)

via flight from Chengdu – 1.5h

Major activities:
  • Old town
  • Ganden Sumtsenling Monastery
  • Nixi Village
  • Napa Lake

via bus from Zhongdian – 12h

  • City Walks
  • Playing in the Park
  • Eating at the french bakery

Ping’An – Oct 7 to Oct 10

via flight & bus from Kunming & Guilin – 1.5h & 3h respectively

Major activities:
  • Rice terraces and local villages

via bus from Ping’An 4h

Major activities:
  • Rural scenery
  • Bamboo rafting
  • Meeting up with new friends
  • Rock climbing
  • Swimming in the river

I made it all the way to the top!  The view was amazing from up there.

Exit to Vietnam – Oct 16

via train & bus from Yangshuo & Nanning (6.5h & 7h respectively)
