Yangshuo: Rock Climbing in China

I went rock climbing in Yangshuo, China. It’s one of the top climbing places in the world. We went with two of China’s top climbers, Abond and his wife Ting. They were both super fun and encouraging.

This is a super cool video of Abond climbing in Yangshuo.  It shows some of the beautiful scenery in Yangshuo as well.

Ting was super patient and encouraged everyone as they climbed.

We also went with another traveling family.  They have 2 boys, one in grade 3 and one in grade 5. Their names are Emile and Felix. We started at about 12:30 and ended at 5:00. When we were all ready we got on a mini van and set off to our climbing section. The mountain wall we were climbing was called Swiss Cheese. Yes, it’s a funny name but it makes sense once you see it.

When we got to Swiss Cheese we learnt a few things. First of all was that the equipment would get ruined if bug spray touched it so we couldn’t use it around the equipment. Second was the a, b, c, e, f, g check:

A for Anchor

B for Buckles (on the harness)

C for Connections

D for Device

E for Everything Else

G for GO!

The first climb they opened was the easiest one.  Jacob went first. He was brave because the first time is the hardest. He almost made it to the top the first time. The second time he did it he nailed it!

Second to go up was Emile who is the older brother. Right before he went up Abond setup the next, harder climb which my dad started to climb first. He didn’t take very long but he said it was hard, when he got down Emile got down too. Then I went up the harder climb. I thought it was pretty hard but mostly really fun.

I really enjoy rock climbing on a real rock. I find it is a lot more fun than in a gym. Once everyone got  to climb at least twice, Abond opened a more technical climb and I went first.

Jacob Climbing

Only Jacob, my Dad and I climbed the technical climb  because it got too late. After that climb we all got back in the mini van and headed back to town.

This is our whole group.

I felt that the day was amazing and a great experience, especially so, because we went with our friends and two of China’s top climbers!

  1. Well done Emma! What a great experience. I don’t generally like Swiss Cheese, but that kind I might enjoy!
