Years of planning, discussions and counting down the days has finally brought us to the last few days before our big trek departure date.
Excitement, anxiety, anticipation, uncertainty, elation and hesitation were a few of the roller coaster feelings that came along with the process of shutting down our house, packing up our backpacks and saying goodbye to our friends and family.
The kids had their own way of dealing with the matter. Jacob became fidgety and was constantly trying to poke us or pop his face just a few inches from ours. Unusual, indeed. Emma would go silent and reflective. We developed a way of communicating our feelings with a ‘thumbs up, thumbs down, or somewhere in between. It was fair game for them to ask us the same.
It didn’t happen without it’s final few glitches though. Jacob woke up the day before our flight out with an abscess tooth. Luckily, I’ve been with a fantastic clinic that has a dentist on call at all times. We made arrangements to meet and got Jacob taken care of. I’ll have to say that the Tooth Fairy really compensates richly when you’ve endured 5 needles and a few good yanks to get the molar out. It all worked out in the end and we’re just grateful that it didn’t happen after we left Vancouver.
And so, now it’s time to board the plane and westward we shall go. Beijing, here we come!
